Splitting content into two modules
Posted: 18 Sep 05 9:40 PM (United States)

Dear Hans-Peter,

Is it possible to split existing content into two or more modules? Say, I have 20 entries in a single DNNPortal-Download module, and need to create two modules with 10 entries in each. Copying a module and then editing won't work because copying is really shadowing. Another option would be to export/import content, but I can't see it for this module. What would you suggest?

Danke schoen,

 - Ilya

Ilya,
no simple way !

The Export / Import (IPortable Interface) is not implemeneted, and will not work properly for DNNPortal-Dowload. This interface doesn't support file export /import.

You can only create a new module and enter the data manually .
And for the selection of the image and file you can choose the local file feature, so that you not must upload the files a second time.

Dear Hans-Peter,

thank you for the quick answer. It looks like a deficiency of the core framework that there is no way to create a copy of a module and then work with it separately from the initial module.

I followed your suggestion, but ran into several problems. I select "Use local file" and specify "DNNPortal-Download/username"  as File Location. I can now see all files in the directory (initially I could see just a single file so had to synchronize with database in FileManager), but there is no way to see a file extension for longer filenames. Further, when I try to select a local Preview image and point to the same folder, the selection box doesn't display any files at all.

I ended up copying files from "DNNPortal-Download/username" to some other folder (with FileManager) and renaming all of them to remove the ".resources" extension, then synchronizing with database, before I could bring them into DNNPortal-Download as local files. What am I doing wrong? It sounds like re-uploading all files from local machine would be faster.

Thanks,

 - Ilya

Ilya,
sorry, I have had forgotten the problem with the ressource extension in my suggestion before.

I believe you are right, that it could be faster to upload the files a second time then renaming and moving the files via the filemenager.

By the way, this is the first time I've heard from the need to move files from one module instance to another.

I will have a look whether it is possible to use the IPortable interface for that case.
Maybe I find a solution and will implement this in the next version.

best regards

Hans-Peter

Hans-Peter,

thanks for looking into this; if you make progress on import/export for the module, I'd be happy to test.

In the meantime, is there any way I can tweak tables in SQL to make some of the uploaded files appear in a different DNNportal-download module?

Thanks,
